Sophie Zine takes notes from Sophie, the cat, and never forgets to bring on the sass. With this in mind, the publication began as a do-it-yourself project to expose the growing art culture in Oklahoma and surrounding Midwestern states. Articles and photos document a new movement of an artistic community that’s led by the up-and-coming local artists in the region. This project features the work of some of most talented writers, photographers, designers and artists in Oklahoma. Stories highlight the music, film, fashion and literature that's stimulating our independent-thinking brains. Other Sophie Zine articles offer outspoken commentary on a wide variety of social issues - hitting on everything that the other big cats won't. Sophie has been featured in NONzine and on the Oklahoma Creativity Project Web site. Other publications, like OklahomaRock.com, Oklahoma Gazette, and Look @ OKC have supported Sophie Events by recommending them as the place to be in Oklahoma. Sophie Events are known for offering a wide array of entertainment. The events feature folk, indie and electro music. And it's no surprise to see beat boy dance battles, art shows by local artists, and do-it-yourself booths with crafts and/or vintage items at a Sophie Event. Sometimes, this all manages to happen in one night. Nearly two years after Sophie Zine’s conception, it has established itself as the young voice of Oklahoma City. The Web site is currently undergoing a revamp headed by editor-in-chief Natalie Wright with the help of artist and graphic designer, Jeffrey Sparks. Stay tuned for what's to come. |
