Leaving the herd
What I really want to do is grab people by their backboneless frames or by their shriveled up cojones and scream, “STOP BEING SHEEP. JUST. STOP. IT.” I realize, however, that I will have to be content to just vomit about it into MS Word, as sheep are notoriously deaf to anything but the voice of the shepherd.
I could say that I just simply don’t “get” people that are content to never think for themselves and willingly swallow any opinions that have been regurgitated into their little open beaks, but I used to be one, actually. Religion and fear caused me to fashion myself into a sheep, never daring to question because questions were labeled as “doubt” and doubt was giving Satan a foothold in the battlefield of the mind. Even though I was a very competent person, I squelched it in favor of being pious. When I started to analyze parts of my religion and life without the strict tunnel vision of the church I was a part of, I started to realize just how much I disagreed with things like the condemnation of homosexuality.
What I would like to stress to everyone from that experience of mine is, please, PLEASE, just think for yourself. Do not believe something simply because your pastor, your parents, your friends, your professors, or your holy book tell you to. The sheep mentality has been the root of such major disasters like the Crusades, 9/11, Salem Witch Trials, sexual abuse in the clergy, slavery, the Holocaust, and the Iraq War. If enough people would have simply examined what the hell was going on and made opinions based on their own thoughts and convictions, and did not just bend over and accept whatever the authorities that be gave to them, most of these horrors could have been averted.
Even if you believe in a God, surely he would want you to use the brain he gave you for more than rosary recitation and motor skills. Earthly authorities that be support the herd notion, because sheep are easy to control and manipulate. You are a much easier pawn if your mind is shut off, after all. Big Brother prefers drones.
No leader is ever worth total allegiance. No human is completely correct about anything. Everyone should be subject to critical cross-examination – pastors, presidents, parents, the media, everyone. Completely loyal, blind faith causes catastrophes.
There is simply no excuse to not think for yourself in America with all the education we have available to us here. If we were still in earlier times, when most people could not read the Bible to figure out the priests were lying to them and abusing their power, or most of the population was illiterate and women still not schooled, I could forgive the tendency to accept any mandate or opinion from an authority. But in modern America, there is just no excuse.
Above all, do not be for one second afraid to think for yourself for fear of being different, dissenting from your religion or family, or fear of being condemned by whoever you believe would condemn you. Teaching people not to question for fear of punishment is one of the most brilliant ways of control that has ever been utilized. Do not submit to it. Live. Be human. THINK. You’re not truly alive until the day you form your own judgments.
