Sodomy is for lovers
I am probably preaching to the (queer) choir on this one, but homosexuality is still regarded as unnatural or wrong to most of the population. I, too, used to share this viewpoint. I’ve seen from both sides of the fence, though I am convinced I am on the correct side now in my embracing of non-heterosexuality as a completely valid lifestyle. My former stance was that since the Bible said it was wrong, it was wrong. Most religions, in fact, say it is wrong, going so far as to not let anyone that isn’t hetero past the gates of their heaven.
Why is it wrong, though? Homosexuality is a sin to most religions, simply because they all had a fundamental belief that sex without procreation is a sin. It’s not so much that a man having sex with a man is a sin, but that any sex that is not within marriage rites and resulting in or attempting procreation is immoral.Sex was not made for enjoyment, but for continuing the species. It just happened to be enjoyable so people would be more willing to populate the earth. There is even a story in the Old Testament about God smiting someone because he dared to use the “pull out” method of birth control. Seriously. Genesis 38. Poor bastard was named Onan. How dare someone have sex without the intention of creating life? Obviously most of us do not hold this view today, as is evidenced by the bounty of prophylactics and oral contraceptives on the market.
Also, any intercourse had outside of marriage was a sin. Heterosexual sex outside of marriage was just as damnable as homosexuality, actually. It reiterates that sex without the intention of creating life was wrong. So, that means anyone that jerks off in the shower to a completely heterosexual fantasy is just as guilty of wasting seed as the man who has sex with another man. Also, the woman that slaps that Ortho-Evra patch on weekly is just as guilty as a woman who refuses to be impregnated by a man, and would rather sleep with women. People like to skip over that part, though. We can have as much sex as we want, just not gay sex, right?
Again, though, like I said in “The Gender Classifieds,” this is a modern world and archaic tribal practices and values don’t necessarily apply to us today. Honestly, how many more people can we fit in this world? Don’t we have quite enough already? We’re a little overpopulated, if I must say, so what’s the harm in not breeding? I’m quite sure much of the will still be propagating away, so we are in no danger of dying out due to lack of reproduction.
Furthermore, nowadays women are not incapable of owning property or making their own income, so they do not need to get married to a man to survive. Marriage was needed because women had no rights, and it was the only way they could be socially and financially stable. And, of course, they had to marry a man, since men held all the power and property. If men were running off marrying men, who would take care of the women? Now, though, women are finally considered independent human beings (at least in the civilized world.) Marriage to a man is not necessary. Therefore, if two men want to marry or two women want to marry, there is no social structure upset.
When people say homosexuality is unnatural, they really should be saying that it is historically seen as unprofitable. The fact is, it is perfectly natural to be sexually attracted to people, whether you like them tall with muscles, pretty and dirty hippies, boys in rock bands, girls with tattoos, or the same sex. The other sex is just another “type.” We all have types, some people’s just happen to have the same genitalia as they do. We should all have the freedom to love whoever makes our little hearts flutter, and hump whoever turns us on, whatever gender they happen to be. There is nothing unnatural about heterosexuality OR homosexuality. People having to defend their right to like what they like is just as insane as someone being crucified for what kind of ice cream flavor he likes. Whether it’s chocolate or vanilla, you are more attracted to one over the other, and both are equally valid choices.
